My objective with The Freelance Condition Project is to describe the field of freelance environmental education, to become fluent in this topic, and to help make freelance environmental education a more reliable career choice.
This investigation was born out of my experiences as an independent informal educator, the conversations I’ve had with other educators like myself, and my observations of how independent educators fit into the field of environmental education.
To become fluent about this subject, I need to begin talking. I need to take a position on some issues so my thinking about these issues can grow and change.
I’ve thought a lot about the exchanges I’ve had with people over the years, and I’m finally going to make my “asks” and hope this leads to a new conversation with colleagues and others.
I want to ask academics not to dismiss independent informal educators and the experience and professionalism they bring to science communication.
I want to ask educators employed at non-profit organizations to not write-off freelance educators as being less professional.
I want to ask the business sector not to assume freelance educators working in natural resource fields are “radical” or “hard-headed environmentalists.”
I want to ask organizations looking for community partners not to assume that nature non-profits are the only sources of information and the only partners worth considering.
I want to ask organizations asking independent professionals for customized services not to be surprised or offended when a freelance professional presents a fee for their services.
I assert that freelance educators working in natural resource fields and environmental education are uniquely positioned to create change in communities.
To investigate this assertion, I need your help.
If you are an independent professional working in these fields, please consider completing the survey for freelance professionals created for this project. Your responses are confidential and your anonymous replies will be combined with other anonymous replies.
I created this survey so I could begin to describe the field of freelance environmental education.
