21st-Century Naturalist

One of the characteristics of a 21st-century naturalist is the ability to embrace the urban environment as being a part of nature.

The birds, bees, and bats do it. Why don’t we?

Yes, there’s concrete.

And asphalt-concrete.

There’s smog.

Potholes.

Trash.

There are also planters.

Window boxes.

Front yards.

Back yards.

Parks.

Courtyards.

Potted plants.

Carefully-designed green spaces.

Botanic gardens.

Native plant gardens.

And that flower on your table at the restaurant.

There is more nature in urban environments than we think.

Let’s embrace it.
